7 Bangkok Day Trips Actually Worth Taking (With Private Car Prices)

One Day, Unlimited Options

Bangkok is perfectly positioned for day trips — ancient capitals, beach islands, floating markets, and national parks are all within a 2-hour drive. But choosing the right destination matters. Some are worth it, some aren't.

Here are the 7 actually worth your time, ranked by how good they are.

1. Ayutthaya — The Must-Do

80km north, 1.5 hours by car. Ayutthaya was the Thai capital before Bangkok, and its temple ruins are UNESCO World Heritage. You'll spend 4-5 hours exploring temples that look like something from Indiana Jones.

Private car: 2,000-3,000 baht for a full day. Our Ayutthaya tour includes a driver who knows the route and can suggest which temples to prioritize.

Train: 20 baht from Hua Lamphong (1.5 hours). Cheapest option but you'll need to hire a tuk-tuk or motorbike at the ruins.

2. Kanchanaburi — The History Trip

130km west, 2 hours by car. Home to the Bridge over the River Kwai, Death Railway museums, and Erawan Falls (7 tiers of turquoise pools). Combine both for a full day.

Private car: 2,500-3,500 baht. Book here.

3. Pattaya — The Beach Escape

150km southeast, 2 hours by car. Pattaya gets mixed reviews, but Jomtien Beach is decent for a day trip, and Nong Nooch Gardens is impressive. Best combined with other stops.

Private car: 2,600-3,300 baht. Book here.

4. Hua Hin — The Royal Beach Town

200km south, 2.5-3 hours by car. Hua Hin is cleaner and more relaxed than Pattaya. The night market is excellent, Cicada Market is artsy, and Khao Takiab temple has monkeys and ocean views.

Private car: 3,300-4,200 baht. Book here.

5. Amphawa Floating Market — The Weekend Classic

80km southwest, 1.5 hours by car. Only open Friday-Sunday. Amphawa is less touristy than Damnoen Saduak and has better food. Take a boat tour along the canals at sunset.

Private car: 1,800-2,500 baht. Book here.

6. Koh Samet — The Island Day Trip

180km east, 3 hours by car + 30-minute ferry. Koh Samet has white sand beaches and clear water. Doable as a day trip but tight — an overnight is better. Still, if you're desperate for a beach, it works.

Private car: 2,600-3,500 baht. Book here.

7. Bangkok City Tour — Stay in Town

Don't underestimate Bangkok itself. Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Chinatown, Chatuchak Market — a full-day city tour with a driver who knows parking and timing is worth considering if you're short on time.

Private car: 1,500-2,500 baht. Book here.

What We'd Skip

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market: Overcrowded, overpriced, everything is mass-produced souvenirs. Amphawa is the authentic alternative.

Snake farm / Crocodile farm: Tourist traps with unhappy animals. Skip.

The Cost Reality

A private car for a day trip costs 1,800-4,200 baht. Split between 2-4 people, that's 450-2,100 baht per person. Compare that to a tour group at 1,500-2,500 per person where you're on someone else's schedule — private is often cheaper per person and infinitely more flexible.
